Article Abstract:
There has been extensive media coverage recently of the apparently falling standards of mathematical ability among secondary and university students. Some observers believe that modern teaching methods are leaving students unable to cope with basic mathematical concepts and unable to solve problems requiring more than one step. However, most teachers feel that mathematical standards have not fallen. Students are being introduced to a wider range of mathematics in the past, and this is generally felt to be positive.

Read, and the world's your fortune cookie
Article Abstract:
The 'Books and Beyond' scheme originated in the US, and is now being used by a school in the West Midlands. It encourages children to read more by offering small incentives to reach reading targets. The scheme also encourages adult participation, and both children and adults have reported less interest in television and computer games as a result.
