It's not violence that Middle England won't tolerate, it's police snooping
Article Abstract:
Extremely tough police reaction to demonstrations such as those accompanying the construction of a bypass in Newbury, England, is more likely to attract criticism from the general public than the demonstrations themselves. Demonstrations are generally peaceful, but there is always a danger that they will be taken over by an uncontrollable minority and become violent. This is detering ordinary people from joining demonstrations, even though they feel strongly about environmental issues.

'Cold comfort' payments row boils over
Article Abstract:
The UK government has come under attack as very low temperatures trigger payments of 8.50 pounds sterling a week to households in many parts of Scotland and the north of England. Some observers claim that the payments are not high enough, and that many families will not receive any money because the government has set very strict conditions. At present, payments are only made to households on income support where there are children under five, disabled or long-term sick or pensioners.

One year on, John Major remains the grey man
Article Abstract:
A cross-section of the general public gives opinions of UK prime minister John Major in Apr 1993 after one year in office. People of all ages and from all walks of life find him dull, lovely, sincere and honest. They feel he has no leadership qualities and has done nothing to improve the country's economy. Some of those who voted Conservative at the general election find him a disappointing prime minister.
