It's raining in the fast lane

Article Abstract:

The Palme d'Or prize at the 1996 Cannes film festival was won by Mike Leigh's 'Secrets and Lies,' against strong competition from films by high profile directors such as Robert Altman and Bernardo Bertolucci. The Best Director prize went to Joel Coen for 'Fargo.' There was considerable interest in 'Crash,' David Cronenburg's version of J.G. Ballard's 1972 novel, which has some sexually explicit scenes.

All you need is mud ...

Article Abstract:

Most films set in the Middle Ages tend to follow the stereotyped view of what life was like during these times. They show people in armour, religious fervour, people with terrible diseases and an interest in witchcraft. Some like to purify the Middle Ages somewhat, while others show a great deal of mud. In many ways, exact period detail is not as important as portraying the spirit of the age.

Grinding her axe

Article Abstract:

Linda Borden, who assumed the name of the famous parent-killer Lizzie Borden for her profession of film director, made the film 'Love Crimes'. The script was written in 1984 by Allan Moyle, but no man was interested in directing it. Linda defends the film against censorship problems and feminist complaints about portrayal of victimisation, masochism and eroticism.
