A modest proposal: try eating with the television off
Article Abstract:
Some observers are beginning to express concern about the fact that two-thirds of Britons eat their evening meal in front of the television. The majority of these people recognize that watching television kills the art of conversation and can have a negative impact on family life, but they still prefer to watch television while eating. It is also possible to argue that there are some benefits associated with watching television while eating. The television can be company for people who live alone, for example, and can help people to relax after a busy day.

Off to Heaven in a Hertz

Simple boxes can be built with 18mm blockboard. An undertaker may be willing to carry out embalming. A double plot at a cemetery can be bought in advance for 120 pounds sterling in 1993. A hired van is more cheerful than a hearse. A list of coffin-bearers can be prepared in advance.

Fighting fear and fishermen in the night
Article Abstract:
The ancient custom of netting baby eels or elvers, which are numerous in the River Severn, reaps 30 pounds sterling per kilo. Elvers are transparent, two-inch long creatures which cross the Atlantic from the Sargasso Sea every spring. The National Rivers Authority issues 20 pounds sterling licences; only hand-held nets may be used. The elverman stands on a small promontory known as a tump to catch elvers on a fast stream. A record catch is 28 kilos in one night.
