Jazz lives, OK?
Article Abstract:
Jazz is not dead, according to saxophonist Denys Baptiste. He reports being totally overwhelmed on hearing the news that his debut album 'Be Where You Are' had been included on the shortlist for the 1999 Technics Mercury Music Prize. He feels that jazz is becoming increasingly difficult to market, and regrets the fact that jazz is often seen as being only for intelligent people. He believes that it is important for music to be challenging.

It'll make a grown man cry
Article Abstract:
Vocalist Jimmy Scott does not bear any grudges against those who have imitated him, such as Johnny Ray and Nancy Wilson. Indeed, he welcomes the fact that what he did may have encouraged others. He recalls that he began to specialize in slow-tempo ballads after joining the band of Lionel Hampton in 1949. He found that using slow, subdued songs brought a very positive response from audiences. He is now 74, but still has a large following.
