Jolly Roger used to deter smokers
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government is considering displaying a Jolly Roger skull and crossbones on all cigarette packets. The move is aimed at persuading youngsters not to take up smoking. A law in Canada has already made it necessary to display a health warning on one quarter of a cigarette carton, it is hoped that the new design will deter people further. The Jolly Roger logo is white and will be placed on a plain black background; it is hoped that the design makes the packs look uninteresting and serious. Tobacco companies play upon consumer choice by offering brightly coloured pack designs, and believe that the packaging is a fundamental part of this choice. A full list of ingredients must also be displayed on any cigarette carton in Canada. There is some concern that the "bad" image may make the tobacco products exciting and risqu to some. *

Passive smoking in pregnancy causes gene mutation in babies
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women exposed to passive cigarette smoke are more likely to have babies with genetic mutations linked to cancer. This is the first time evidence for genetic damage in the womb caused by smoke has been found. There is evidence that maternal exposure to passive smoke as well as a history of paternal smoke exposure is correlated with increased childhood risk. Scientists say this shows the need for tougher controls on smoking in public places.
