The loneliness of the long-distance teleworker
Article Abstract:
There are now 1.3 million people in the UK working full-time or part-time from home, and this number is expected to reach 3 million by 2004. Some health professionals believe that many people who work from home are negatively affected by being alone, sparking off a range of psychiatric illnesses. They warn that frequent contact with others is a basic human need that cannot be met by teleworking. A report to be published in 2000 by the Health Education Authority indicates that social isolation can also cause heart disease, weakening of the immune system and many minor physical problems.

Living in the sin bin
Article Abstract:
Pupil Referral Units, which are used to educate difficult schoolchildren in the UK, generally have a very negative image. However, they can actually be the best solution for children who have suffered considerable emotional damage in mainstream school or as a result of events in their family life. Children who find that they are unable to attend mainstream school regularly will often gradually reach a stage where they can cope with attending a Pupil Referral Unit, where their individual needs are taken into consideration.

Go home for a long day at the office
Article Abstract:
Working from home can bring significant advantages, including increased independence and flexibility and avoiding bureaucracy and commuting. However, some people find that working from home does not suit them. They may begin to suffer from social isolation, and may not be able to cope with working in a much less structured environment. Working in an office tends to give people an additional context within which they can be themselves.
