Koreas play last act of Cold War in earnest
Article Abstract:
North and South Korea have been separated by a demilitarised zone (DMZ) since 1953. A military presence remains on both sides of the DMZ, including some American troops on the South Korean side. North and South have now signed agreements on reconciliation and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. This accord was meant to signal an end to war and herald the resumption of contact between the two sides. But distrust remains and some fighting has continued. A recently leaked Pentagon secret report foresees a possible attack on South Korea by the North.

Casting off the bear's shackles
Article Abstract:
Vladivostock, in the far east of Russia, was reopened to foreigners in 1992 but business cannot develop until Moscow gives economic autonomy. Vladivostock wishes to resume the role of seaport to Asia and to exploit the region's rich resources, mainly timber and minerals, itself. United Nations agencies have fund-attracting schemes and foreign businessmen conduct feasibility studies, but only quick deals and second hand Japanese car sales flourish.
