Kremlin takes fright as Lebed bids for power
Article Abstract:
Alexander Lebed will become a key candidate to replace Russian President Boris Yeltsin if he succeeds in his bid to become governor of Krasnoyarsk, a region in western Siberia. His likely victory in this region has become a cause for concern, as he is known for his nationalist views. The Communists fear that he will win over many of their voters, and leading figures in Moscow, Russia, believe that he could gain funding from raw materials barons in Siberia for his bid for the presidency.

Gruff hero of Afghanistan wins hearts of the nostalgic
Article Abstract:
Retired army officer Alexander Lebed, who is running for the nationalist Congress of Russian Communities in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, is expected to do well. He has emphasised his belief in a free press and a small, fully professional army. He has also criticised the war in Chechnya and called for help for the 25 million Russians who remain outside the country. It remains to be seen whether Lebed will win enough support to mount a challenge for the presidency.

'Third man' courted as the king-maker
Article Abstract:
Alexander Lebed, who gained around 15% of the vote in the first round of the Russian presidential election, is now the subject of eager attention from both Gennady Zyuganov, the Communist presidential candidate, and president Boris Yeltsin. These two men are aware that it is extremely important to obtain Lebed's support, and they are prepared to make concessions. It is most likely that Lebed will accept an offer of senior post in a new Yeltsin government.
