Labour's likely lad
Article Abstract:
The success of a future Labour government in the UK could well be determined by John Prescott, the current deputy leader of the Labour party. He is widely regarded as a bluff, straightforward man who is opposed to rapid change in the Labour party. In fact, he is a complex man who can be both sensitive and shy. He has a great ability to think unconventionally, and regards himself as one of the Labour party's original modernisers. He is prepared to show firm loyalty to Tony Blair in order to maximise the party's chances of winning the forthcoming general election.

New voting system 'faces 8-year delay.' (United Kingdom electoral reform)
Article Abstract:
Electoral reform in the UK could be delayed until 2006 because of the changes in the boundaries of Members of Parliament's seats, according to a report by Lord Jenkins of Hillhead. Jenkins has recommended that the best option to the existing voting system is the Alternative Vote (AV) system combined with the AV-plus top-up system, with a review to be undertaken after two general elections. Jenkins also believes Wales and Scotland are over-represented in the House of Commons and that this should cease.

Middle England pays for a forgettable penny package
Article Abstract:
The reaction within the Conservative party to the UK government's 1996 Budget has been rather negative. Some Conservative MPs have criticised the Budget for have a negative impact on the party's traditional supporters, as it abolishes tax breaks on profit-related pay and makes a large increase in duty on cigarettes. Others believe that this Budget contains nothing which will make it particularly memorable and that it should have gone further.
