Lack of appetite for minnows to keep shares looking sweet
Article Abstract:
The background to the present surge in the UK stock market is significantly different from that which existed before the stock market collapse of Oct 1987. Inflation is still at low levels, and generally seems to be under control. Most significantly, the current bull market lacks depth, with most company directors not believing that share prices are overvalued. Another reassuring feature about the current surge in the stock market is that there have been no ambitious takeover bids, in contrast with 1987.

The good news that shook investors
Article Abstract:
Stock markets in countries including France, Germany, the UK and the US have seen a significant recovery since summer 1998. There has been a particular recovery in banking shares and in cyclical stocks such as automotive and engineering companies. Some observers believe that the revival has taken place too quickly and that there could be difficulties in the future. There is still considerable fear about world economic developments, regardless of how stock markets have eased.

Stocks tumble across the globe
Article Abstract:
There is a growing fear that the financial crisis in Asia could prompt an economic slowdown across the world. Concerns about this possibility have led to a sharp drop in stock market values. The FTSE 100 index in the UK declined by more than 100 points, reducing the value of the largest UK companies by almost 20 billion pounds sterling, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong fell below the psychologically significant 9,000 mark as share prices dropped by 5.3%.
