Last frontier for culture vultures
Article Abstract:
A Walsall conference in Jun 1992 entitled 'The Politics of Collecting' discussed the display of popular culture in museums, previously renowned for representing 'high' or middle-class white culture. Walsall Museum and Art Gallery and other Midlands museums exhibited popular collecting in 'The People's Show' in 1991. The Anacostia Neighbourhood Museum, part of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, exhibits Afro-American culture which represents the people. Cultural identity was seen as powerful by some: cultural institutions facilitate people's development.

Brush up on your figures
Article Abstract:
Those who collect Old Master sculptures have been tending to shift away from French 18th century allegorical figures and busts of well-known people and towards Italian 18th century bronzes emulating antique Roman status of deities. Many sculptures are being purchased by wealthy middle-aged people seeking to use them as an element of interior decoration. Price is largely determined by rarity and by aesthetics. Collectors can only gain confidence by training themselves to recognize the sculptures with greatest aesthetic appeal.

Carbon steel and macho appeal
Article Abstract:
Antique cutlery sometimes looks rather unattractive, especially if it is made of carbon steel, which blackens with age. However, it has an air of elegance and glamour, and is much more interesting than modern cutlery. It is possible to purchase a scimitar and fork from a dealer for around 100-120 pounds sterling, but a whole table service will probably cost at least 3,000-5,000 pounds sterling. It is very important not to wash antique cutlery in a dishwasher.
