Learning at the chalkface
Article Abstract:
Experiments with American teacher training include professional development schools where teachers practice what they are taught theoretically in the classroom. In Virginia students spend two days a week at George Mason university and three in school, where the regular teacher acts as mentor. The student teachers are employed as substitute teachers and the mentors are paid extra. In Michigan education professors spend half their week in school encouraging practising teachers to attend university courses. Teachers appreciate the respect for their professionalism in training new teachers.

'There's one hell of a crisis out there.' (teaching profession attracts fewer young people; includes case studies)
Article Abstract:
The UK currently trains around 20,000 teachers a year, but the government recognises that this will have to be increased to 30,000 if there is not to be a serious shortage of new teachers by the beginning of the 21st century. Some observers point out that applications from people wishing to train as teachers are at very low levels, and feel that it will be impossible to boost teacher numbers unless standards are reduced. There has been a further fall in applications for specialist teacher training in subjects where there are already shortages.

Stormy days as the inspector targets trainers
Article Abstract:
There is considerable fear and confusion among teacher training institutions in the UK as Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead undertakes a further review of their standards. In some cases, institutions may face closure. Some observers believe that the methods used by those who are inspecting teacher training institutions are flawed, and that the inspectors are taking a punitive approach, rather than making positive suggestions about how standards can be improved.
