Lebanon's ancient temple of music
Article Abstract:
The Roman amphitheatre in Baalbeck, Lebanon, has traditionally been a key symbol of Lebanese culture. However, it has not been possible to hold the traditional annual music festival there for some time because of the civil war. The first proper festival for many years has taken place in 1998, with many Lebanese regarding this as vital stage in the country's recovery. There are strong indications that Lebanese musical life is being revived, with the Beirut Conservatoire having received government funding to recruit for a national symphony orchestra.
