Triumph of mind over matter
Article Abstract:
A number of research projects are investigating alternative ways for humans to communicate with computers. Much of this research aims to help the disabled, and generally uses non-invasive techniques such as paids on an arm or leg. However, researchers at the department of neurology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, have developed tiny implants that are placed in the motor cortex of patients' brains. Nerves gradually grow over the implants, connecting to the electrodes inside them and allowing the computer to detect brain signals through a small transmitter situated just inside the patient's skull.

The man who wants to shrink the world
Article Abstract:
Laptop computers can be expensive, but they have been shown to considerably boost employees' productivity, according to Xircom co-founder and CEO Dirk Gates. PCMCIA has given his company the opportunity to extend its product range, and it now sells modems, ISDN and mobile phone cards. However, Gates does not think that it is appropriate for Xircom to move into other hardware areas. He believes that portable computing will be a key growth sector, with economies of scale bringing costs down.
