Legal cover is no panacea
Article Abstract:
Marie Parnes, 30, was sexually assaulted in the Ramses Hilton in Cairo but after considerable litigation against Hilton she has had to formally drop her claim as she cannot afford to continue. Her legal bills to date, over 12,000 pounds sterling, have been paid by the travel insurance policy she took out before travelling although some of the payment required her to complain to the Insurance Ombudsman before it was forthcoming. She feels that it was the inefficiency of the insurance companies that caused the bill to be so high but in the end she receives nothing.

Awash with forgotten money
Article Abstract:
Savings and investment institutions have millions of pounds of unclaimed funds for which they need to trace the owners. Procedures vary, but the money is usually put in a high interest account until the owner is found. The Building Societies' Association and National Savings do not alert people except for Premium Bond winners. Hill Samuel write three times, check the address and may telephone those who do not reply. The Prudential Corporation contacts up to 12 sources if they do not at first succeed.

Lenders face inertia sales ban
Article Abstract:
Director General of Fair Trading Sir Bryan Carsberg has asked mail order companies to stop selling insurance by negative option and intends to stop lending institutions from doing the same. He has written to trade associations such as the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the Consumer Credit Trade Association, asking them to caution their members about inertia selling. Credit protection policies are included with loan applications unless borrowers tick a box to decline the cover.
