Legal fight to save 'ecological cathedral'
Article Abstract:
Dyfed County Council took Alfred McAlpine to the High Court for using a 1944 interim development order to extend limestone quarrying in the Gweniais valley near Dyfed, south-west Wales. Campaigners against destruction of the countryside found the 470 acres of woodland to be a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). A rare turlough was found on the site. McAlpine applied to register its rights under the Planning and Compensation Act 1991 and gave the Welsh Office a deadline which expired on Jun 5 1992.
