Legal leeches are bleeding the NHS
Article Abstract:
The NHS paid out 150 million pounds sterling to settle medical negligence cases in 1995, and this figure is set to continue rising rapidly. It has become common for solicitors to advertise their services in this area, attracted by the possibility of obtaining large fees. Almost all medical negligence cases are undertaken with the support of legal aid, which places great pressure on the legal aid fund. It is now time to consider a completely new approach to medical negligence cases, possibly establishing a tribunal where fault could be established without solicitors pushing for excessive settlements.

Poverty by a thousand cuts
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative government's policy of continually reducing taxes means that there is a severe lack of funding for public services, even those which are most extensively used, such as health care. This is forcing the closure of many health and welfare programmes which are relatively inexpensive to run at present but which have the potential to bring very large long-term savings. Such programmes include those designed to support families, thus ensuring that their children are not taken into care, and those which work with young offenders or drug abusers.

Animal rights can damage your health
Article Abstract:
There is growing opposition in the UK to experiments on animals, particularly to vivisection. However, many protesters do not really know what happens in research laboratories where animals are used. They fail to realise that research on animals is vital in curing serious medical conditions, and that all drugs must be tested on animals for safety reasons. Extremist activity has made eminent scientists very unwilling to talk about their work, and this could place the UK a long way behind other countries in medical research.
