Lenin's bewildered heirs contemplate a lost kingdom
Article Abstract:
There are nine Communist organizations currently operating in Russia, covering a wide range of views. The largest of these is the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, headed by Gennady Zyuganov. It has 500,000 members, but is divided and weak. Those who vote for Communist organizations are mainly elderly people from rural areas, an electorate which is not growing. The Communists stand very little chance of gaining real political power in Russia.

Heirs to Lenin grasp at victory
Article Abstract:
Russia's Communist party believes that it has now shaken off the negative image of its past, and emphasises that it is a human, loving party. It is optimistic about its prospects in the forthcoming parliamentary election, with polls indicating that it will win the most seats in elections to the lower house. The revival of the party is causing considerable concern to western observers.

Article Abstract:
Political and economic reforms in Russia have failed to benefit ordinary people, even those who are well qualified. Salaries have fallen in value, unemployment is very high, and many people have to work very hard to grow their own food. It is against this background that the Communist party may well gain considerable support in the forthcoming parliamentary election.
