Zeroual celebrates victory over terror
Article Abstract:
President Liamine Zeroual of Algeria has claimed that his recent election victory is a triumph for democracy in a country which has seen a great deal of violence over recent years. However, some observers believe that the situation is still extremely unstable. There has certainly been a turn away from extreme Islamist groups among ordinary voters, but the election cannot be seen as entirely representative, as it was boycotted by the opposition. This gives cause for some doubts about the future of democracy in Algeria.

Lost souls of the Algerian night: now their torturers tell the truth
Article Abstract:
Members of the Algerian security forces have given evidence of torture and disappearances. Prisoners have been raped and had their nails pulled out. False death certificates have been signed, and security forces have been involved in killing raids where they were dressed as rebels. Women have been arrested who have no political interests and who are not likely to be involved in terrorism. There have been savage actions undertaken by the Islamic Armed Group, but the government also appears to be acting with brutality.

One man's heroic fight against a regime with a taste for torture
Article Abstract:
Mohamed Tahri is an Algerian lawyer who aims to help families of people who have disappeared following their arrest, with the police claiming not to have heard of them. Cases include a paraplegic in a wheelchair who had bones broken in an interrogation. Tahri is concerned that he himself could be arrested and disappear, and the police have criticised him for his concern over human rights and his contacts with foreign organizations such as Amnesty Internaional.
