Lessons from South Africa for peacemakers in Northern Ireland
Article Abstract:
There are not necessarily very close similarities between the peace deal in Northern Ireland and the process of reconciliation in South Africa. However, there are a number of ways in which events in South Africa can provide a model for Northern Ireland. The South African experience indicates that it will be necessary for political leaders and ordinary people in Northern Ireland to show great endurance if radicals are to be marginalized. It will also be very important to be able to put individual problems aside temporarily while progress continues to be made in other areas.
