I would rather the Pope went to Iraq than our warplanes
Article Abstract:
The UK and the US have expressed opposition to plans by Pope John Paul II to visit Ur, Iraq, the birthplace of Abraham, and then travel on to Egypt and Israel. It seems that these two countries do not wish to see Saddam Hussein's status boosted by greeting the Pope, and they also wish to avoid damaging media coverage of the impact of sanctions on ordinary Iraqis. It is possible to interpret the Pope's visit as the beginning of plans to forge closer links between Judaism, Islam and Christianity. His visit will also boost the morale of the Christian community in Iraq.

Believe it or not, the unions are back - and it's good news
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly widely recognized in the UK that the traditional concept of employers protecting their employees' interests in return for loyalty has almost completely vanished. Many employees are beginning to feel insecure, and this is encouraging them to consider becoming a member of a trade union. Around 27% of working people, including the self-employed, currently belong to a trade union or association, and this proportion is likely to increase.
