Let children do the important homework: idling, dreaming, being themselves
Article Abstract:
The UK government's initiative to ensure that all schoolchildren undertake homework from their earliest days at school is a reflection of a wider view in the Labour party that work is the solution to all social problems. The government seems to believe that everybody should work and that leisure is a waste of time. It is now time for the government to recognize that children do not benefit from being constantly educated or entertained. They should be allowed time in which to develop at their own pace, and should be able to organize their own leisure time.

Could government take on the task of making happy families?
Article Abstract:
Most Britons would not share the view of Ed Straw, brother of Home Secretary Jack Straw, that the government should establish a National Relationship and Parenting Service to support relationships and parenting. For most people, being told how to handle their relationships and how to deal with their children would be unacceptable, even though they would wish to be able to seek help if they feel they need it. The pamphlet from think-tank Demos in which Straw's view appear gives little attention to the actual culture in which ordinary people live.

King Tony, look over the palace gates
Article Abstract:
It is not wise to assume that the UK's Labour government enjoys unquestioning support among ordinary people simply because there is widespread relief at having ousted the Conservative party. This is reflected particularly in the government's approach to social policy. The government refers to an 'underclass,' but in fact has little understanding of the poor as people or as citizens. It claims to be taking a radical approach, but the parameters of the debate on social policy are in fact very narrow.
