This is madness, unless we all agree to pay up
Article Abstract:
The UK government is considering establishing an NHS Drugs Committee which will decide whether new drugs meet strict conditions for cost-effectiveness before they can be prescribed by National Health Service (NHS) doctors. This approach has been adopted in response to the fact that many new expensive drugs are now being made available, placing a great financial burden on the NHS. However, there is still a danger that people will be prepared to make great financial sacrifices in order to purchase drugs which have not been approved for NHS prescribing.

Wanted: a Department for Banging Heads Together
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Social Exclusion Unit is set to become a key element in its social policy. Its main role will be to coordinate social schemes, bringing together the many different departments that can often be responsible for such schemes. It is hoped that this approach will eliminate the problems currently caused by the fact that different agencies are attempting to work in different ways with the same families. It is now clear that effective coordination will be the only way of dealing with serious social problems.
