Let the viewers in on the game
Article Abstract:
The drama-documentary formula, in which real events form the basis for a dramatic reconstruction, has become increasingly popular. However, it has also been the subject of some criticism. There have been cases in which such reconstructions have caused distress to the survivors of the events portrayed, and objections have also been raised when reconstructions have been inaccurate. The time has now come to make a clearer distinction between drama-documentary and fact-based drama.

Losing the plot at the National Theatre
Article Abstract:
The UK's National Theatre was initially hailed as having the potential to be bold and innovative. However, it has strayed a long way from this approach, and now focuses on productions which are respectable and uncontroversial. Some observers feel that the National Theatre is now run by and for directors and designers, rather than for members of the public who are looking for productions which differ from those put on by many repertory theatres across the country.

Making space for theatre
Article Abstract:
There were many unusual venues for dramatic performances in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s, but during the 1980s there was a rapid decline in non-purpose-built spaces. Now, playwrights and producers often have to make compromises about the best theatre in which to stage a particular play. There is an urgent need for all major cities to build a flexible 400-seater playhouse. This in turn would greatly encourage the staging of classical, contemporary and new plays.
