That Scottish problem again
Article Abstract:
Devolution has for many years been a significant issue in politics in the UK, and has recently gained public attention once more with prime minister John Major's insistence that the UK will not be split up. Latest debates centre on Scotland's dislike of the Conservative government and on its desire to separate itself from the poor image of the UK. Any new arrangement for Scotland is likely to be extremely complicated, making it impossible to operate an effective parliamentary government.

Let's say goodbye to Britain
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom is already in a very weakened state, so it is wrong of prime minister John Major to claim that independence for Scotland would have a disastrous impact. Scotland is already regarded positively abroad, and it may be that it could gain support within Britain as well if devolution went ahead. Independence would give Scotland the confidence it needs to establish a strong role for itself within Europe, as Ireland has done already, and would greatly boost its economy.

Divided on the state of the Union
Article Abstract:
A recent debate between George Robertson of Scottish Labour and Alex Salmond of the Scottish Nationalists brought 'independence' for Scotland into conflict with 'devolution.' It is clear that the majority of Scots want some form of self-government, but there is still considerable confusion about where devolution ends and independence begins. This confusion is unlikely to be resolved until an elected all-Scottish body comes into operation.
