Let's privatise the Olympics
Article Abstract:
Members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have clearly been misguided in accepting various forms of bribes, but their incompetence can be regarded as having more serious repercussions than their corruption. By not adopting a very strong anti-drug stance, they have failed to protect the integrity of the Olympic brand. Furthermore, they have not developed the Olympic brand in the same way as a commercial brand would have been developed. It is now time for the IOC to adopt the normal commercial and ethical standards to which any multinational would subscribe.

The high price of peace
Article Abstract:
The conflict in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, has had serious economic repercussions in the Balkan region, particularly for Croatia and Slovenia. There will also be very high costs associated with building the region up again after the signing of a peace agreement. Western governments will easily be able to afford to meet the direct costs of the conflict, but the indirect costs are likely to be much more significant than the direct ones. Indirect costs include the negative impact on consumer confidence in Western Europe.
