Students struggle to bridge the gap
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom college and university students face paying tuition fees from 1998 but students who have arranged work with a charity before going to university will not have to pay. The government plans exemption for students who arranged charity work prior to the announcement of fees, on Jul 23 1997, but the charities want this deadline to be extended or they argue that fewer would-be students will consider working for charities. A formal announcement on fee waivers will be made after consultation.

The cost of Dearing
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government plans to publish a White Paper on funding for higher education in fall 1997. The issue is being discussed by academics following the publication of the Dearing Report, which deals with the issue. There is concern that poorer people could be excluded from higher education, especially longer vocational courses such as architecture. Parents may increase their protests before fall 1997, and the issue has yet to be decided.
