Literature by association
Article Abstract:
The 1998 Cheltenham Festival of Literature involved around 300 authors, and therefore presented many challenges for the organizers. Some 42,000 people attended, some of whom were celebrities not hitherto known for their literary interests. Many people come to pay homage to a favourite author, and then attend related sessions because they become interested in what they can learn. The largest audiences were for people for whom literature is only an incidental part of their life. These included Chris Patten, John Simpson and Judi Dench.
