Long live the liberal dinosaur
Article Abstract:
It is common in the UK to be critical of those who study the humanities, dismissing such studies as not suiting people for the world of work. However, this attitude does not prevail in the US, even though society there is extremely market-driven and materialistic. Indeed, most professional, political and cultural leaders in the US followed a liberal arts curriculum at undergraduate level. No leading US higher education institutions offer undergraduate degrees in professional subjects, with a liberal arts BA being the admission requirement for studying subjects such as law, business and medicine.

Old man's burden
Article Abstract:
It is widely accepted in the US that parents pay their children's undergraduate tuition fees, except in cases of extreme hardship. There are many corporations which specialise in providing loans to parents who are funding their child's higher education. Tuition fees are charged by both private and state-funded universities, with fees being higher for students who live outside the state in which the institution is located. All the best universities have systems which ensure that the most desirable students are able to enrol, whatever their financial situation.
