Lord Sieff of Brimpton

Businessman Marcus Sieff was born in Manchester, England, in 1913. He began his working life in 1935 in Marks and Spencer, with which he had family connections. He served in the Royal Artillery during the second world war and became vice-chairman of Marks and Spencer in 1965.

Sir Herbert Ashworth

Businessman Herbert Ashworth was born in Burnley, England, in 1910. He began his working life at the Burnley Building Society, moving to the Portman after 10 years. He became general manager of the Co-operative Permanent Building Society at the age of 40.
