Lost generation makes its voice heard
Article Abstract:
There is considerable social tension in Lille, France. The city is well maintained, but there is a sense of despair in some areas. The main social problem is unemployment, with more than 40% of young people being without work. The centre of the city seems to be thriving, and it attracts 6 million visitors each year. However, the city centre is surrounded by a ring of poor neighbourhoods where there is great unrest. This has been expressed recently in the burning of buses by young people, a trend which has been seen in a number of cities across France.

Euro launch keeps optimists smiling
Article Abstract:
Strong economic recovery in continental Europe since 1997 has been mainly based on a rise in consumer spending and domestic investment. There is now almost no inflation at all in Germany and France, while interest rates are at very low levels within the whole euro zone. However, some observers believe that the recession in Asia and Russia will soon start to have an impact on Europe. It is not at all certain that the single European currency will have a positive impact in the immediate future, although it will bring long-term benefits.
