Love, Haiti and the 200 pounds sterling lunch
Article Abstract:
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, but prices there can sometimes be extremely high. It is located in the Caribbean, but its culture is close to that of tribal Africa. Port-au-Prince, the capital, seems intimidating by night, but during the day offers many attractions, including a noisy, colourful market and the richly decorated Cathedral of the Trinity. There are still elements of Haiti's relatively prosperous past, but visitors will also be aware of the considerable poverty in which ordinary Haitians now live.

Where macho passions ride high
Article Abstract:
Residents of the city of Quetta, Pakistan, make tourists feel very welcome. There is a strong masculine culture in the city, and women are rarely seen. There are many food stalls, with sajji, a whole leg of lamb spitted over a wood fire, being a particular local speciality. There are many signs of the violent earthquake that took place in the city in 1935, killing an estimated 30,000 people. Many local men play cricket, but there is also strong interest in buzkashi, a game played on horseback using a dead goat instead of a ball.

Retreat from Moscow
Article Abstract:
The Black Sea resort of Sochi, Russia, is very different from the rest of Russia. It has palm trees along its promenade, and is surrounded by tea plantations. Most visitors to the resort are happy to just relax, and there are therefore few arranged activities. It attracts few western visitors, probably because of its proximity to Chechnya and Abkhasia, but is in fact a safe destination. Most of the visitors are Russians who cannot now visit the resorts in the Ukraine or Baltic States.
