Bill Bradley, Democratic Senator for New Jersey and Jack Kemp, Housing and Urban Development Secretary in the cabinet, both have famous sporting backgrounds and share many ideas about government. Bradley, 49, played basketball for the New York Knicks and is an Olympic gold medalist. Kemp, 56, was an American football quarterback for the Buffalo Bills and the San Diego Chargers. Bradley, from St Louis, travelled to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 1965 and understands black problems because of his experience with them in the basketball world. Kemp was brought up in Los Angeles and also has concern for social and racial equality. Together they sponsored two world monetary conferences in Zurich and Washington.

Article Abstract:

The Chartered Association of Certified Accountants says that almost three out of four manufacturers in the UK use possibly invalid information in their decision making. Specialist management information is not collected, relying instead on data that is needed for external financial reporting. This does not however go into sufficient detail but aggregates figures to produce an overall picture. Labour hours are, for example, used to calculate overheads but labour costs are only on average 12% of total costs. Thus small changes in this restricted area can have a dramatic and unwarranted effect on calculations.

Life's a pitch for women footie players

Article Abstract:

There are now 15,000 registered women football players at more than 450 clubs in the UK, and women's football is thought to be the most rapidly expanding sport in the UK. They now play in a league with three divisions, with the top 10 clubs forming the National Division. The women concerned are extremely enthusiastic, even though they have to make many sacrifices in order to play and receive very little financial support.
