Man's abuse of the giants
Article Abstract:
Mountains cover 20% of the earth, influence the weather, supply minerals, food, timber and water yet they are endangered by tourism, pollution, hydro and mineral projects and global warming. The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in Jun 1992 includes an item on mountain ecosystems in the Agenda 21 environmental action programme. Mountain Agenda is a report, 'The State of the World's Mountains' which includes the first worldwide evaluation of high land. It recommends no further dam building or skiing facilities but opposes a Mont Blanc national park. Heli-skiing is banned in Austria and France, Austria is considering closing some areas to cars, but poor countries such as Nepal cannot afford to restrict tourism.

Cull or cure dilemma as badgers get blame for epidemic
Article Abstract:
Many UK dairy farmers believe that the government should take action to reduce badger numbers, as they feel that the explosion in the badger population over recent years is responsible for the growing number of cases of tuberculosis in cattle. However, scientists remain uncertain about the exact nature of the link between badgers and tuberculosis in cattle. Limited culling of badgers by the Ministry of Agriculture has not restricted the spread of tuberculosis from the south-west of England to other parts of the country.

'Brown's gay? So what?' Tyneside is outed as a tolerant electorate
Article Abstract:
Most voters in Tyneside, England, do not feel that it is important that their local MP, Nick Brown, has been outed as gay. Most people feel that Brown's private life is his own affair and that the fact he is gay does not matter as long as he continues to perform effectively as a politician. Masculinity is still strongly emphasized in Tyneside, and this may be why Brown chose not to openly admit to being homosexual, in contrast with Chris Smith, Culture Secretary and MP for Islington, London, England.
