Media fight back on police libel
Article Abstract:
The decision by the UK Court of Appeal to reject a libel action brought by five police officers against The Guardian newspaper is one of a number of developments recently that has gone against the Police Federation. This organization collects small weekly subscriptions from police officers in return for full legal support, and has until recently been very successful in obtaining compensation for police officers who claim to have been the victims of libel. It now seems that the climate for libel has shifted in favour of media owners, both in respect of police claims and other claims.
