Memo to Mr Hague: Europe can't save you
Article Abstract:
THe UK Conservative party may find it very difficult to recover from its substantial defeat in the May 1997 general election. Indeed, the Labour party seems to be increasing its support as it forges closer links with the Liberal Democrats and moves away from its traditional commitment to nationalization. The Labour party has also benefited from a change in its image, particularly among business leaders. Conservative party leader William Hague may feel that the party can gain support through its anti-European stance, but this is not necessarily the case.

Sorry, Mr Hague, but voters are warming to the euro
Article Abstract:
UK Conservative party leader William Hague is seeking to gain a mandate for his policy of opposition to UK entry into the European single currency until at least 2008. However, there are indications that this policy is no longer as popular with voters as it once was. Opposition to UK entry into the single European currency is waning, particularly as the Labour government seeks to convey a positive image about Europe. It is possible that Hague will find that Euroscepticism will become a declining source of votes.

The McCarthyite witch-hunt behind Hague's euro ballot
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party will in the long term be damaged by the decision to ballot party members on the issue of a single European currency. The ballot could also have a negative impact on the reputation of party leader William Hague. Some observers believe that the main purpose of the ballot is to identify the remaining pro-Europeans in the party. This is a misguided approach, as it would single out people who are very popular with ordinary voters.
