Ministers 'panic' on benefits revolt
Article Abstract:
The UK government is facing considerable controversy over its Welfare Reform Bill. Almost 70 Labour MPs have signed an amendment opposing cuts in disability benefits. Under this amendment, plans to means-test and limit entitlement to incapacity benefit would be blocked. The Conservative party has accused the government of panicking over the possibility of a backbench rebellion. It has been emphasized that Prime Minister Tony Blair is determined to ensure that the reforms are pushed through.

Defiant MPs ignore whips on terror Bill
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable opposition among backbench MPs to moves by the UK government to push through the Criminal Justice (Terrorism and Conspiracy) Bill. Under this legislation, it would be easier to convict members of proscribed terrorist organizations. Many MPs are concerned about the fact that Parliament has spent very little time debating this legislation. Some are calling for clauses on the prevention of international terrorism to be delayed.
