Ministers reject advice to keep BSE from sheep
Article Abstract:
European agriculture ministers have decided not to accept advice from the World Health Organisation and the European Union's Scientific Veterinary Committee to introduce a ban on the use of spinal cord and spleen from sheep and goats in the human food chain. The European Commission has now been requested to look at this issue further, after having taken advice from the European Union Scientific Veterinary Committee. UK agriculture minister Douglas Hogg has staged that such a ban would require changes in the way sheep and goats are handled at slaughter and in trading practices.

Call for anti-sleaze rule rejected
Article Abstract:
The UK government should ensure that no company which employs an MP is permitted to bid for a public contract, according to Conservative MP Richard Shepherd. This view has been rejected by prime minister John Major, who believes that such an approach could lead to the rejection of suppliers able to offer good value for money. A recent investigation by the Independent newspaper has indicated that at least three former ministers are connected with companies associated with bids for the 1.6 billion pounds sterling sale of Ministry of Defence married accommodation.
