Moll Flanders, a model for the 1990s
Article Abstract:
The forthcoming showing on UK television of an adaptation of the novel 'Moll Flanders' by 17th writer Daniel Defoe will attract very little moral outrage, even though it shows both sex and nudity. This is because it is set in the past, rather than the present. Defoe himself was familiar with underhand deals and double standards, and his attitudes are closely in line with modern sensation-seeking moralism. He remade himself many times, just as the heroine of his novel does.

Why New Labour is in search of an ideology
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is seeking to present itself as the party of New Theory. This approach seems strange, particularly given that the party has traditionally not given much attention to its own philosophers. The party's Third Way will take a firmly middle-of-the-road line, but a new development is the belief that pragmatism cannot justify itself. The Labour party is looking for an all-embracing concept to explain the fact that it does not have an all-embracing concept.

The god of granite who could shatter stones with plain words
Article Abstract:
Poet Laureate Ted Hughes had a great aural impact, with his 'Birthday Letters' a forceful book of verse that left a deep public impression. Hughes had a tremendous command of rhythm and speech and he wrote superb poetry for children. He became increasingly secretive and introspective following the suicide of his wife Sylvia Plath, which frequently left him with little human emotional contact. Hughes died in October 1998, aged 68.
