Dazed and enthused by their sudden success

Dazed & Confused magazine has gradually become much more upmarket since it was launched in 1992 by Rankin Waddell, Jefferson Hack and Ian Taylor. However, it still focuses on the new and radical and is very different from highly structured consumer titles. It has attracted considerable interest from advertisers, even though it sells only between 40,000 and 50,000 copies a month and has no clearly defined market. It has recently been responsible for the first masthead programme to be broadcast on UK terrestrial television since regulations on masthead programming where changed in Sep 1998.

There has been a voluntary ban on television advertising of spirits in the UK since the mid-1950s. However, it now looks likely that this agreement will collapse as manufacturers look for ways of boosting declining sales. Investment of 6 million pounds sterling has been made in television advertising time for spirits so far in 1996, and it is estimated that the total for the year could reach 15 million pounds sterling. United Distillers, which was the first manufacturer to advertise on television, now plans to invest 3.6 million pounds sterling in a pre-Christmas advertising campaign.

Forces promote idea of a fairer cop
Article Abstract:
It is clear that there have been cases of sexism against women police officers in the UK. However, women now account for a growing proportion of graduate recruitment into police forces. Graduates may wish to apply as a standard entrant, but they may also wish to consider seeking a place on the police forces' fast-track career development programme, known as the Accelerated Promotion Scheme for Graduates. There is very strong competition for places on this scheme, with fewer than 2% of applicants being successful.
