Motorists face ban from city of London
Article Abstract:
UK motorists may be banned from the City of London, creating clear streets for 'high value' business traffic, if controversial plans proposed by City councillors are implemented. Another proposal suggests a GB 3 charge to enter the Square Mile to relieve congestion while chauffeur-driven cars, limousine services and emergency services would be allowed unconditional access. It is argued that excessive traffic on local roads is seriously affecting the required activity of City organisations and councillors claim that London's position as a leading financial centre will be under threat if such measures are not implemented. Some 70% of the 250,000 vehicles that currently enter the City everyday are passing through, neither starting nor finishing their journeys there. Motoring organisations have described the proposals as elitist and unfair.
