Mugging: not a black and white issue
Article Abstract:
Operation Eagle Eye, a police initiative aimed at tackling street crime, comes at a time when there is considerable debate about the role of black people in street crime and about relations between black people and the police. It seems to be true that most muggings are carried out by blacks, but this could simply be because a white victim is more likely to report a mugging than a black one. Street crime is in fact only a very small problem in relation to other crimes, but the number of muggings in London has doubled over the last 10 years.

Are we hostages to gun culture?
Article Abstract:
The recent shooting of children at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland, will inevitably prompt calls for stricter gun controls in the UK. However, it is hard to see what else could be done to tighten up a system which is already regarded is among the strictest in the world. Applicants for a gun licence must show a very good reason for wanting to own one, and the strict checks involved have deterred many people from applying. The number of gun certificates on issue was down to 670,000 at the end of 1994, the lowest level since 1971.

Blair's vision of change boosted by new recruits
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has increased its membership to 305,000, the highest for 10 years, and aims to reach 500,000 by the general election. Party leader Tony Blair's vision of New Labour is based on a mass membership party which votes on key issues through ballots. However, the party will soon start to find it difficult to continue increasing its membership, and it is uncertain how active the new members will be and what parts of the population they will come from.
