Must we bury eccentricity under a cloak of political correctness?
Article Abstract:
Recent controversy surrounding Glenn Hoddle, the coach of the England football team, who made apparently insulting remarks about disabled people, and Conservative MEP Tom Spencer, who was forced to resign after revealing that he is gay and uses drugs, has highlighted issues relating to political correctness. These cases are most significant for what they reveal about levels of tolerance within UK society. Those who place strong emphasis on political correctness should question their own motivation, being aware that calling for Hoddle's resignation could merely be a reflection of guilt about being unable to help the disabled.

So just what is this wonderful new world of Widdecombism?
Article Abstract:
British politician, Ann Widdicombe, has been portrayed as representing common sense and honesty, as well as being slightly eccentric. Ann Widdecombe has been seen as a possible leader of the Conservative Party, so her views deserve examination. She is a moralist, in contrast to Margaret Thatcher, a previous Conservative leader, and she argues that Britain is seen as providing easy pickings for illegal immigrants. She opposes abortion and does not see the issue as one of individual conscience. She is not likely to attract young voters to the Conservative Party.

Michael Portillo's sexual past is colourful - but it's his own affair
Article Abstract:
Former UK Defence Secretary Michael Portillo should not be seen as a hypocrite because he has admitted to involvement with homosexuality in his youth but opposed the lowering of the male homosexual age of consent and permitted the expulsion of gay people from the Armed Forces. It should not be assumed that he is indicating that what was right for him is wrong for others. His sexual activities should be his own business, and the Conservative party should be cautious about rejecting him, as he is one of its most talented and charismatic members.
