Internet Ireland, the Internet service provider (ISP), will be acquired by Independent News & Media and Princes Holdings, the publisher's associate firm, it emerged on 12 January 2000. Investment of US$ 15mn is planned towards the establishment in Ireland from February 2000 of an Internet platform, a service not currently offered by Independent's market rivals.

UK: BBC POISED TO SELL BEEB.COM STAKE

The BBC is expected in a matter of weeks to conclude the sale of a small holding in its important commercial Internet site, Beeb.com, with an unnamed finance firm understood to be the leading candidate. BBC Worldwide, the UK-based broadcasting group's commercial unit, could glean over GB[pound] 100mn from the sale.

NTL takes its seat among the media industry's big hitters
Article Abstract:
Cable operator NTL is to pay 8.2 billion pounds sterling in cash and shares for the residential cable networks of Cable & Wireless that pass 4.3 million homes in the UK. NTL will also inherit franchise rights to areas with a further 1.7 million households where cable networks have not yet been installed. The deal was made possible by a strategic alliance with France Telecom, which provided backing of $5.5 billion and will obtain a stake of almost 25% in NTL.
