Nervous Saudis tell US: War on terrorism will not be launched from our airfields

Saudi Arabia has refused permission for the US to launch air strikes on Afghanistan from its bases. The Saudi authorities are aware that many Muslims secretly support calls by Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the terrorist attacks on the US, for the US to remove its military presence from Saudi Arabia.

Military action in Afghanistan was an obvious consequence of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. However, the campaign has not proceeded as anticipated. There has been much confusion, and Osama bin Laden remains at large.
