Netanyahu fights to win back key Russian voters
Article Abstract:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is theoretically in a strong position in the run-up to the election on May 17, 1999. He heads a coalition of parties which have the support of at least 53% of Israelis, while Ehud Barak, leader of One Israel, can rely only on the bloc support of the Israeli-Arab community and the secular Ashkenazi middle and upper classes. However, Netanyahu is aware of the importance of not allowing Barak to win the support of the Russian community, which accounts for 14% of the electorate.
