Never take your voters for granted, Mr Jospin
Article Abstract:
New French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has proved through the recent general election victory of his Socialist party that pluralism in politics can be successful. He was able to join forces with other leftwing groups, including the Communists and the Greens, to defeat the centre-right government, even though these groups have very different views on some issues. He now faces the challenge of proving that pluralism can work as a method of government. His coalition government will have to deal with a number of sensitive issues, including unemployment and monetary union.

A French strike at the heart of Blairism
Article Abstract:
There is competition between UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin to become the leading example of modern, European, left-wing leadership in the 21st century. Jospin has gained a reputation for being willing to amend his policies according to popular opinion, so is now seeking to define 'Jospinisme' clearly. This process has not been very successful so far. However, his cautious approach is better suited to the complex coalition politics of continental Europe than Blair's.
