New question for Germany
Article Abstract:
The recent decision by leading German manufacturing concern Daimler-Benz to sever links with Fokker highlights the fact that German concerns of this kind, which have traditionally been seen as very strong, can no longer offer job security. This trend comes at a time when the German economy is already experiencing difficulties, and the government now forecasts that growth will only be 1.5% in 1996. Economists are beginning to express concern about the country's ability to meet the Maastricht convergence criteria, and also point out that the Bundesbank will have to reduce interest rates eventually.

Wired up to some big questions
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has announced that, if it becomes the party of government, BT will connect all schools and libraries to the information superhighway free of charge. This will give people access to a wide range of communications technology, but does not necessarily mean that they will want to use it. The Internet may provide a small amount of useful information, but its influence could turn out to have been greatly exaggerated. Increasing access to the information superhighway may simply mean that children spend more time playing computer games, rather than gathering serious information.

Get radical: remodel public services
Article Abstract:
Inproved management of public finances would be an easy way for the UK government to be able to introduce the tax cuts which it so desperately needs to make in order to increase its support. This could be done without reducing standards of public services, which in many cases are already seen as too low. For public services directly provided by the public sector, the best approach is to improve performance, while for those funded by the state from taxpayers' money, a radical reorganisation is required.
