Nigerians turn to magic in fight against oil firms
Article Abstract:
International oil companies operating in the Niger Delta, where Nigeria has extensive natural resources, have shown little consideration for local people. Oil extraction is generating large sums of money, but local communities have been neglected. Indeed, conditions are becoming increasingly desperate for local people, particularly as a result of oil spills. Young people from the region's Ijaw ethnic group are now using Egbesu, an ancient local cult, as they seek to fight back against the Nigerian government and the oil companies.
